Google Purchases Nest and Sells Motorola

Posted on 30th January 2014

One of my favorite gadgets in the last 2 years is easily the Nest thermostat. This device gives you amazing control on heating and cooling your home while trying to keep energy costs down. With it’s ability to sense when you are away and even build a schedule based on your habits, the device has grown as a huge success. Throw in their latest gadget to replace the old smoke detector, the Protect, it is no wonder why Google offered $3.2 Billion for the company.

Announcing the acquisition on the 13th, Google beefs up their portfolio of promising projects and growth for the search engine company. Google had purchased famed mobile phone company Motorola in recent years, but as of this week, sold the brand to Lenovo.

It was a little disappointing to see Google not maximize the Motorola brand during their short ownership, but the hope is that Nest will continue to grow alongside some of Google’s other glamor products such as Glass. It is also no surprise that by acquiring Nest, Google has also acquired two former Apple employees tied to the famous fruit company’s early beginnings with the iPod.

From Nest’s own site:

Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone. We’ve had great momentum, but this is a rocket ship.

Time will tell if this truly helps them blast off, but as long as the company continues to drive innovation in home automation, they will.

You can read the entire story about the company’s beginnings and recent acquisition from Tony Fadell over at the Nest site here.
